I’m not a daring person. It isn’t easy for me to try new things and stretch out of my comfort zone. But when I do, I’m glad I made the effort. I often need a gentle nudge (or hard push) from my husband or daughters.
I don’t mean climb Mount Everest or jump out of an airplane. I’m sure I’ll never do those things. What I’m talking about is participating in activities that make me uncomfortable and even anxious, but deep inside, I know they’d be good for me. Like go to a party where I don’t know many people, submit an article to a publisher and not be afraid of rejection, or try a new skill.
I love to hike in the mountains. I’m happiest when there’s a wide, flat path. I don’t like precarious, steep, narrow walkways. I’m nervous to climb on rocks. There have been many times I’ve wanted to turn back, but my family has given me extra encouragement to carry on. “Come on, Mom, it’s not that bad! You’ll love it once you get up here!” I don’t want to disappoint them, or myself. So I trudge on.
When I arrive, my husband and girls are so proud of me. I’m proud of me too. There have been many gorgeous waterfalls and stunning views I never would’ve seen, had I not pushed myself. I would’ve missed witnessing those splendors with my family.
I don’t want to be in a rut and live a boring life. I want to reach higher to achieve my goals. I want to go on adventures, make new friends, and travel to exotic lands. I want to get the most out of every single day.
Life is for experiencing. For living.
~Jenny

What an interesting quote you chose! Though it can be hard and frightening, great things usually come from pushing ourselves to go beyond the limits we conceive in our minds. Whether it be great sights on a trail or amazing results in life. May you have the courage to do the amazing things that make you feel uncomfortable at first 🙂

There are many wonderful hikes that you can do which don’t require you to be ‘on the edge’ in more ways than one. Check out some of the walks on my blog for some examples. You can almost walk them without leaving your armchair! 🙂

That intro quote rings true in recruiting – there’s a huge difference between having 10 years of experience and having one year of experience repeated 10 times. 🙂

Great Post. I love Robin Sharma. Little changes go a long way. Pushing through a comfort zone, just makes you stronger and you realise – hey I can do this, I am capable. It is the best feeling ever.
Lovely post, and thanks for following me.

Yes, far too often we allow our fears to hold us back from many great and amazing experiences. Fears which often only exist in our minds. The more I trust the Lord and more forward by faith the more of an amazing life I live.

Create a Happy List. That’s what I call it. Most call it Bucket List or Things to Do Before I Die, but I’m sticking with My Happy List for a reason. Listed all 50 down, crossed out some, adding more. In fact, i just remembered one last night, will probably add later 😉

I feel that going out from the comfort zone is crucial in developing one self as a person. Not only that, we are able to experience life in a new way. Living is much more than being stuck in your own personal bubble. ☺

Lovely post! I especially love your quote at the beginning. There is an ordinary courage in doing those little things each day that scare us, but that make life worth living. It doesn’t mean not being anxious or afraid, but it means not letting it hold us back, and you are a wonderful example of such ordinary courage!

Thank you! You’re so right… we still can be nervous about doing something new, but it doesn’t mean we won’t do it, and it won’t hold us back. I love your insight 🙂
