Last weekend my husband and I went on a double date with two of our best friends. We saw The Accountant, which we loved. It’s about a high-functioning autistic man who is a math genius, played by Ben Affleck. He uses very creative accounting–cooking the books–for dangerous criminal organizations. It’s an exciting thriller that also touched my heart.
But this isn’t a post about the movie, and I’m definitely not a movie critic. What I want to tell you is what happened before the show.
My friend and I were waiting to buy popcorn and drinks. The line next to us opened up, so I went over there. I ordered, and the cashier hesitated and smiled. I wondered what was going on.
She held up a $20 bill and said, “See this? Not the person before you, but the person before him, gave me this money and told me to use it until it runs out. There’s $6.75 left, so it’s yours.”
Really? I had a big smile on my face. I’d never been the direct recipient of someone paying it forward.
It wasn’t the amount of money that made me happy. It was knowing that someone cared and wanted to give, for the sake of giving. Nothing was being asked of me in return. It was pure kindness, from one human being to another.
I wanted to thank whoever did it, but that person wasn’t around. Maybe he was somewhere in the lobby waiting to see the reaction to his random act of kindness. Or maybe she was sitting in a dark theater, content knowing that people were warmed by her generosity.
It’s those small gestures that can make a huge difference in this world.

All he wanted was to reduce the hassle in buying popcorn so that people could enjoy the movie more than struggling in queue to buy popcorn . so kind of him .. He dint even ask anything in return

Thanks Miriam! And yes, it was the perfect start, I thought about that. We’d had a fabulous dinner out, then the act of kindness, then a great movie. All in one night! Not to mention being with our lovely friends. 🙂

Whenever I’m feeling down, if I’m in the drive-thru at any restaurant (usually Starbuck’s) I pay for the guy in back of me. Really makes me feel good when I see whoever, trying to see me and who I am and why I’m paying for them. It’s kind of selfish on my part because it makes me feel so good ❤ Blessings

Oh I love that! So kind!! And if it helps you feel better, then it’s a win-win. There’s truth to the saying, “there’s more joy in giving than receiving.” Thanks for sharing (literally, lol). 😊 so wonderful!

I play it forward a lot….and its not to make the person who receives it feel good. even though that’s a great outcome from doing it, its because it make me feel good….I love knowing I have made someone else’s life better, happier, gave them a sparkle in there day to day routine, whether its paying for someone’s meal, of coffee, laundry at a dry cleaners, gas at a gas tank…,it just feels good!!!! I love it…..thanks for sharing your story….xxkat

I love seeing and hearing about random acts of kindness and paying it forward.
One day at the local dunkin donuts, I witnessed 10 random acts of kindness/paying it forward. This one woman who goes there once a week (I think) always pays for the person behind her no matter how much. Well, this one particular day, she unknowingly(until I told her the next time she came) started a chain reaction. Nine people, literally, nine people in a row paid it forward. I just about cried. It was beyond amazing to witness this. A miracle in my opinion.

Random Acts of Kindness….the world would be in a better place if more people thought like that….and it doesnt have to be monetary – hold the door, say thank you and excuse me…..

Little things like that make my day. Any small random act of kindness has the power to restore any faith in humanity I may have lost. I’m glad you liked the film, too! I’m thinking of going to see it for my next film review. Thanks for sharing a piece of wisdom!

I as a single Mom was the recipient of a few wonderful gifts that paid me forward, now I try to do the same in a simple, humble way.
On a hot day, after church I can home with my 5, 3 and 1 year old to see a pink envelope in my door. Inside was money (cash, so I am still unsure from whom?) But the note had a sweet message, “Please use this to go to a pool, zoo or water park!” It was fifty dollars! Thank God, no one snuck over to my apt building and took it! We had so much Fun using this loving gift.
I recently gave money to a single Mom but I didn’t do it secretly. Next time, I should do anonymous giving. . . 💞
